A common sight in the village is to see the woman and the girls sitting together, gossiping and laughing, head down focused on a piece of indigo coloured cloth. They are beautifully embroidering their personality, culture, and symbols of their culture onto a new set of clothes of a tourist’s souvenir. There are countless brocade products that are sold and traded amongst the villages and visitors.

 Ly Mai Chan's sister, Ly Lin, shows her hands. They are intensely blue. Her Dao community, unlike so many other weavers and dyers, use the natural plant extract indigo to provide the base colour for their wonderful garments made from hemp bought from their H'mong tribal neighbours.

 

 

 

 As well as the traditional and distinctive pants and jackets, the villagers make and embroider:

• winter scarves;
• baby and adult-sized hats;
• bags of all sizes, including to fit phones, water bottles and books;
• purses;
• cushion covers;
• wall hangings;
• table cloths;
• leggings;
• belts;
• necklaces; and
• special wedding scarves.

Other products include Silver smithing, traditional medicines, organic honey, fruits and vegetables, livestock, rice, tools, and bamboo woven baskets. These are also handmade products that are bought and sold, from villager to villager or villager to visitor.
